Prepping For The Perfect Spray Tan

We all know spray tanning can be a real bitch, It’s cold, uncomfortable, the stress of steaks, "Cheeto fingers " getting in a machine and it not getting all the crevices. I have lived through the bad tans so you don't have too! I mean hey, practice makes perfect and after about 10 years I think I have mastered the art of tanning.

so lets get into exposing all of my secrets behind a beautiful tan.

First and foremost you want to make sure you plan all of your treatments before your spray tan. Including facials, massages, lash extensions, waxing, mani / pedis etc.

I always recommend to try to start preparing 3/5 days before your scheduled tan and carry it until the night before

—this way your skin is really optimally exfoliated and moisturized instead of a “last-ditch effort” the night before.

Exfoliate Exfoliate Exfoliate

Exfoliate Head to Toe start 3-5 days before your appointment and plan for the final time at least 8 hours prior to your tanning appointment.

— Exfoliation helps slough off any dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin. Build up of dead skin will look patchy and uneven—

I used to wait to the last minute to shave and exfoliate right literally right I went to tan and start hydrating my skin once I was tanned, but I always had a patchy turtle shell of a tan. I have realized poor hydration and exfoliation was the cause of this. I absolutely love a good dry brush, as a lot of exfoliating scrubs have micro beads that cause small tears in your skin that will lead to premature aging. They also leave a build up of oil and clog your pores. When using a dry brush brush in circles do not scrub hard you just want to get the top dead layer harsh scrubbing is going to inflame your skin - be sweet to it.

Don't shave (or wax) the day of your session.

Shaving and waxing should be done [at least] 24 hours prior to your appointment. This allows time for the skin to calm, ensuring a flawless and comfortable spray

Avoid using oil and lotion beforehand.

we want to spray on a clean slate - oil and lotions cause a barrier that can prevent the tan to stick to it.

THE DAY OF YOUR SUNLESS TAN:

Don’t create sunless barriers

Skip the lotion and makeup. While moisturizing your skin in the days prior and following your tanning session can make it last longer, applying moisturizers and lotions hours before can interfere with the absorption process. If you do wear makeup the day of your tan, remove it before spray tanning to get the most even tan on your face.

Also, use deodorant sparingly - day of of course- the zinc and talc in most deodorant interact with the spray and turn your armpits into the grinches twin.

Arrive prepared

Wear lose-fitting, dark clothing to your session (preferably cotton). Also, be sure to remove all jewelry and leave it off until your tan is set. This will prevent your clothes and jewelry from rubbing against your skin and smudging your tan or your clothing being stained by the tanning spray.

Wipe hands nails and feet off immediate after tan, as these areas have the highest cell turnover and will take in the sunless color a lot quicker

Spray Tan Aftercare: 24 Hours After Your Tan

The first 24 hours after your spray tan can make or break how it looks, so it’s important to know what to do after a spray tan. With proper care, your spray tan will keep that stellar glow. Your spray tan will last anywhere between 5-10 days, depending on your skin complexion and how you care for your tan. Taking good care of your skin and your tan in the week after a spray tan is super important, so try these tips:

Here are some of our favorite tips:

1. MOISTURIZE DAILY

Make sure to moisturize in the morning and evening to keep your skin looking healthy. Look for an oil-free, natural moisturizer like Lubriderm or Cerave.

2. AVOID SWIMMING

Avoiding swimming, long showers, baths, steam rooms, saunas, or any other activity that exposes your skin to being wet for long periods of time.

3. AVOID CHEMICALS AND ADHESIVES

Avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine, products containing acids, massages, fashion tape, bandages, and anything else that may strip your tan.

4. TRY NOT TO TOUCH YOUR SKIN

Keep your hands off your skin as much as possible to avoid discoloration. This includes crossing your legs and arms for long periods of time.
